{"id":491795,"date":"2025-12-17T09:40:19","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T09:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mobileworldlive.com\/?p=491795"},"modified":"2025-12-17T09:41:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T09:41:16","slug":"china-mobile-to-be-last-in-hk-to-end-2g-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mobileworldlive.com\/operators\/china-mobile-to-be-last-in-hk-to-end-2g-service\/","title":{"rendered":"China Mobile to be last in HK to end 2G service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>China Mobile Hong Kong was granted regulatory approval to terminate its 2G services next June, becoming the last of the territory&#8217;s four major mobile players to turn off the legacy network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Communications Authority approved the operator&#8217;s application to shut down its 2G network on 23 June 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company said less than 2.3 per cent of its total mobile customer base remain on its 2G network. It has started notifying affected customers to upgrade their SIM cards and, where applicable, their handsets, the operator stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, it was the first in Hong Kong to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobileworldlive.com\/operators\/china-mobile-first-to-end-3g-service-in-hong-kong\/\"> turn off its 3G service<\/a>, which accounted for just 0.25 per cent of its total mobile user base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from GSMA Intelligence showed the operator was the largest in Hong Kong with 8.5 million mobile connections at end-September, behind Hutchison Telephone, under the 3 Hong Kong brand, with 5.5 million, HKT with 4.8 million and SmarTone with 2.9 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just over half of China Mobile HK&#8217;s mobile users are on 4G plans, with the remainder on 5G.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HKT received approval to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobileworldlive.com\/operators\/hkt-secures-green-light-to-shut-2g-service\/\">shut down its 2G network<\/a> in November 2024.
